Why should I recharge my booster after every use?

1. TO PREVENT SULFATION OF THE LEAD PLATES

In our pure lead AGM batteries, during discharge (startup or prolonged storage of the booster) sulfuric acid which is diluted in the electrolyte is attracted by the lead plates. When charging, this process is reversed and the acid “returns” again in the water.

On a vehicle, after starting, the battery is immediately recharged by the alternator and the acid naturally returns into the electrolyte, provided that the vehicle’s alternator is working properly. Therefore, if one does not charge the booster immediately after use, the acid remains on the plates, eating away the lead, causing sulfation and decomposition of the lead.

The deeper the discharge and the more time passes by, the more intense sulfation and corrosion of the lead plates will be.

At some point, sulfation and power loss are irreversible. That is why we recommend to put the booster on charge as often as possible. The booster can remain permanently on charge on its original automatic charger supplied with the unit if you wish.

A booster well charged, ensures a much longer lifetime of the booster’s battery.

2. TO MAINTAIN 100% EFFICIENCY

A well charged booster gives 100% chance of successful starts. Indeed, fully loaded, the booster can deliver the highest power level.

3. FULLY CHARGED = PRODUCTIVITY

Replacing the booster after use in its charging position is a productivity gain and means you will always find the unit where it should be.

That’s an added bonus of choosing from our range of PROPULSTATION Boosters which come with a docking station.

How long will it take to recharge my Booster?

The power of the original charger supplied with your booster is calculated to recharge it to 100% in one night.

What should I do if I do not use my Booster for a long period of time?

Ideally, you should leave the booster on charge with its original automatic charger at all times when not in use. You can leave it connected to the mains indefinitely, and the battery will be maintained at full capacity.

If this is not possible, recharge it at least Every 3 Months for 48 hours using the automatic electronic charger supplied with your unit.

Which voltage should I select to start a vehicle?

When you attempt to jump start a vehicle, make sure that the booster has the same voltage as the vehicle. Thus, you must start a 12V vehicle with a 12V or a 12/24V Booster, on which the selector is plugged into the 12V socket on the booster. Similarly, you need to start a 24V vehicle with a 24V or a 12/24V booster on which the selector is plugged into the 24V socket on the booster.

It is very dangerous to choose a higher voltage to reduce startup time, as was the case in the past. Indeed, a battery (whether that of the vehicle or that of the booster) that is subjected to excessive voltage can emit explosive gases. Also, if you select the 24V socket on your booster, and you connect it to a 12V vehicle, you are likely to damage some components of the vehicle.

However, it is absolutely safe to choose a booster with higher cranking amps even for small vehicles, as long as the voltage is correct.

How do I operate the Booster

First, turn the ignition of the vehicle to the ‘Off’ Position before using the booster.

1. If you have a 12/24V booster, make sure the voltage selector is unplugged before connecting the clamps.

2. Connection
First connect the red clamp (+) to the positive terminal of the battery, then the blue clamp (-) to the negative terminal of the battery.

3. Plug the voltage selector into the correct voltage if you have a 12/24V booster.

4. Starting
After a start attempt of 8-10 seconds, wait 3 minutes before making another attempt.

5. Disconnection
Having started the engine, disconnect the voltage selector if you are using a 12/24V booster. Then disconnect the blue clamp (-) then the red clamp (+).

6. Storing
Return the cables and clamps to their support posts.

7. Recharging
Recharge the booster immediately after use!

Can my Booster damage the electronics in my vehicle?

In recent years, car manufacturers have introduced more and more systems with electronic components in vehicles and engines of all types.

These components are expensive and fragile and it is advised that you be extremely careful when starting engines.

We remind you that SOS Boosters can in no way damage the electronic components of a vehicle when used correctly.

The use of our boosters when following the instruction manual is completely safe, and amounts to replacing the vehicle battery momentarily, which meets the manufacturer’s recommendations. Using a booster is fully compatible with manufacturer’s recommendations as the vehicle only draws the energy that it needs from the booster to start the engine.

Why should I choose a more powerful Booster?

The starter draws from the booster battery only the power needed to start the vehicle. Therefore:

      • EFFICIENCY: A more powerful booster will deliver the required power faster and more easily. Thus, you will attain 100% of your starting immediately, which is a time saver.
      • RELIABILITY: A more powerful booster has more powerful batteries and is more resistant to higher usage loads. This increases the reliability of the booster.
      • LONGEVITY: The more powerful the booster, the less you focus on the batteries to get the necessary power to attain a start, thus prolonging the life of your booster.
      • ENDURANCE: A more powerful booster has more endurance. This means it can start multiple vehicles in a row without suffering, even if you do not have the opportunity to recharge it immediately between two starts.
      • POWER TO SHARE: The most powerful booster can also be used for the lightest of vehicles without any risk. You can safely start the largest Earth Movers, and with the same unit, start a motorcycle engine.

Can a more powerful Booster damage a small vehicle?

No. The booster only draws the power it needs to start the vehicle. It could be compared to the electric circuitry of a house. Regardless of the amperage selected for it (16A, 20A or 40A), it is possible to connect a light bulb that consumes 2W, as well as a washing machine that consumes 2500W, without any risk.

Similarly, if you use a booster of 6400 cranking amps, you can just as easily start a motorcycle that consumes 200 amps as a tank which consumes 4000 amps.

The only thing that you must pay attention to is the voltage of the vehicle, and the appropriate voltage booster. Thus, a 12V vehicle must be started with a 12V booster (or a 12/24V booster connected to the 12V socket).

My Booster will not recharge, what should I do?

First, check that the 230 volt AC to which you connected the boosters charger is supplying enough current to the charger.
Then check that the wires of the connector which is plugged into the booster are not loose or have come out.

If these are both fine, ask your dealer to check:

      • The wiring of the booster.
      • The state of your battery. If it is damaged it may no longer charge.
      • The charger.

My Booster has little or no power, what should I do?

First, measure the voltage of the booster using a multimeter at the clamps:

If you get 0 volts: The internal fuse is blown. You need to replace the fuse.

If you get more than 0 volts: Your booster may require charging. Put it on charge for 24 hours, then check the voltage again.
If there is still no power, you have damaged the battery due to the following:

Insufficient charging:

Insufficient charging of the battery causes its sulfation. The lead plates are corroded by the acid and the battery has lost power irreversibly. You will need to purchase a replacement battery.

Start attempts exceeding the instructions for use

Too long start attempts (more than 10 seconds at a time, without waiting 3 minutes between each attempt) cause over-pressurisation in the battery as well as exhaust gases contained therein. They can no longer recombine and the battery loses power.

Charging voltage which is above recommended, due to:

      • Charging your booster on a non-automatic garage charger or on an automatic charger set to “fast charge” or “boost”.
      • The connection of a 12V booster to a 24V vehicle, even for a short time
      • Recharging a 12V booster on board a 24V vehicle
      • Charging a 12V booster on a 12V vehicle with a faulty alternator where the alternator delivers too high a voltage.

If the charging voltage is too high, it causes the exhaustion of the gases contained within the battery, and drains the battery irreversibly.

In all cases, your fuse or the battery must be replaced. Contact your dealer.

The Battery of my Booster is swollen, what should I do?

The battery is swollen width-ways

Swelling in the width of the battery is caused by charging the battery on too high a voltage.

The battery is swollen length-ways

Swelling in the length of the battery is due to overuse, or insufficient charging followed by more usage.

In both cases your battery should be replaced. Contact your Dealer.

My Booster is indicating it has OV. What should I do?

If your voltmeter indicates 0 volts, check the voltage at the clamps using a multimeter.

      • 0 volts = Internal fuse is blown. You need to replace the fuse.
      • If your multimeter shows a voltage, and you have fully charged the booster, the voltmeter and/or the push button may be defective or broken. Contact your dealer.

Can I use my Booster as a power source for a fridge, lamp, laptop etc?

It is possible to use the booster to power an electronic device.
However, it is important to know that the batteries of our boosters are designed to provide a very high amperage quickly and for a short amount of time. This is the purposeful design of our batteries to ensure the highest power will be delivered to start engines.

This distinguishes them from deep cycle or service batteries designed for long, slow discharges of a few amperes continuously for several minutes or several hours.

Therefore, if you use your booster on a regular basis and for long periods as an electrical supply, the batteries will be discharged quickly, and irreversible damage may occur.

Below 12.4 V, the sulfation process begins and the lead plates will be damaged. We advise you to use the booster as a power source in emergencies only.

Once the Booster is connected to the vehicle, do I need to attempt a start immediately?

Yes, otherwise part of the booster’s voltage will be transferred to the empty battery of the vehicle. Your booster will be depleted on further attempts.

When you connect the booster to the vehicle, the batteries of the vehicle and the booster are in parallel. By the principle of communicating vessels, the respective voltages of the batteries will tend to balance, to the detriment of the highest charged battery: the booster. Therefore, if you connect your booster to a vehicle of which the battery is discharged and you leave it connected, the battery of the vehicle will discharge the battery of the booster.
